"I Can't Breathe" - A Playlist Response to George Floyd

“But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Luke 10:29

It hit me hard when I made this graphic. Wow. George Floyd was from Third Ward right here in Houston and I’ve since found out that he was a friend of some of my friends. He did ministry with people I love in a community I love. He was a person of peace. He was real! He lived! Don’t write this off, he was your neighbor.

I’ve had the idea of making a social justice playlist for a bit and I was just going to make it for me to listen to because the topic is very heavy and I don’t think this is something people would be “happy or excited” to listen to but sometimes that’s not the point. I think this is a lot bigger than me not wanting to make a playlist people won’t listen to. People who look like me are dying senseless and high key gruesome deaths in 2020 at the hand of police officers, ex-police officers, and other people who think they have the right to do so. It’s disgusting and flat out sinful. God hates racism and it is time that ALL believers of Jesus regardless of skin tone adopt the view of our Father.

These songs and poems say what I cannot. What I don’t have the thoughts, experiences, words, instruments, etc. to express. I hope it gives someone the room and space to feel, you’re not alone. I also hope it gives someone a glimpse into the black experience in America.

I do believe that there will be a time that all this will be over. No more injustice, grief, or apathy. This world is not my home, there is a heavenly kingdom that awaits me and all of God’s people. I can’t wait.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
